Welcome to the Jack J. Valenti School of Communication

Individuals aspiring to join our graduate program must fulfill specific requirements to gain admission.

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution
  • Maintain a minimum 3.0/4.0 GPA in the final 60 undergraduate hours attempted
  • Achieve competitive scores on the GRE; successful candidates will ideally have a combined score of 295-300 on the GRE quantitative and verbal sections and a 3.5 on the analytical writing section

Applicants who have received multiple grades of C or below in undergraduate communication courses will not qualify for unconditional admission.

Those who do not meet the criteria for unconditional admission may be considered for conditional admission, given that they:

  • Maintain a GPA of at least 2.7/4.0 in the last 60 hours
  • Have a GPA of at least 3.00 in communication hours
  • Submit acceptable GRE scores, along with other application materials indicating potential success in the program

Admission decisions are based on a comprehensive review of application materials, including letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, transcripts, and GRE scores. Merely meeting the minimum GPA or GRE criteria does not guarantee admission.

If lacking adequate background in the pursued degree, students may need to complete required leveling courses, which could potentially extend the program duration.

International students must ensure their TOEFL scores meet the new minimum requirement of the International Based Test (IBT) of 79.

For conditionally admitted students, maintaining at least a “B” average in the first 12 hours attempted in graduate school is vital. These students must submit a course adjustment form upon completing the 12 hours satisfactorily, to request a change in status.

Advancement to the next stage of the M.A. program, whether the thesis option or the comprehensive exam option, is only permitted once unconditional status is granted.

Unconditional status is typically conferred after ensuring all undergraduate deficiencies have been addressed, all graduate degree prerequisites have been fulfilled, all incompletes on the graduate record have been resolved, and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the graduate program has been maintained.
