The difference between an HBCU and a PWI: I see myself

The Significance of College Experience: Comparing HBCU and PWI Institutions

Every student’s college journey is as unique as their fingerprint. For instance, take the experience of one individual who began their adventure at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). Their decision to attend UTA was initially influenced by family proximity, and the desire for a familiar setting. However, the feeling of belongingness and contentment seemed to elude them.

As a freshman, they swiftly found joy in sportswriting for the school newspaper, uncovering an innate passion for storytelling and journalism. The newsroom became their haven, a place where their words flowed effortlessly. Yet, once outside the comforting walls of the paper, a sense of alienation crept in. Their surroundings didn’t reflect their identity, leaving them feeling like a square peg in a round hole. Despite the love for their craft, something was amiss, prompting a transfer to a community college for a semester.

The subsequent transition to Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) was transformative. The atmosphere was alive with a sense of belonging and inclusivity, embracing the individual and fostering their growth. Participating in various campus activities, from journalism to social events, they felt an undeniable connection, a sense of being at home. The warmth of the campus and the camaraderie of like-minded peers offered a stark contrast to their previous experience.

Reflecting on their academic odyssey, they acknowledge the lessons learned at each stop. UTA primed them with journalistic skills. The community college instilled discipline and time management. However, PVAMU became the catalyst for personal evolution – a place where they discovered their voice and forged an independent path.

Embracing the rich tapestry of experiences, they recognize the profound impact of attending an HBCU. The sense of community, the opportunities unlocked, and the personal growth experienced at PVAMU have profoundly shaped their narrative.

In hindsight, they appreciate each juncture of their educational voyage, acknowledging the role of each institution in sculpting their present and future. Ultimately, their assimilation into Prairie View was more than a mere transfer; it was a homecoming, solidifying their belief that it’s not about the first steps, but the final destination that truly matters.
