High Point University History

High Point University, a private liberal arts institution located in High Point, North Carolina, has a rich history dating back to 1924. Originally established as High Point College in a joint venture between the Methodist Protestant Church and the citizens of High Point, the institution officially opened its doors on September 14, 1924. Over the years, the university has undergone significant transformation and growth, with milestones such as changing its name to High Point University in 1991 and expanding its academic offerings to include post-graduate degree programs.

The campus was originally founded with three buildings and nine faculty members, serving 122 students. Despite the challenges brought on by the Great Depression, the university persevered through reorganization efforts that enabled continued growth. Fast forward to the present day, High Point University has experienced substantial expansion, with notable increases in student enrollment, budget, and academic programs, including the addition of new schools and facilities.

Located in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, High Point University offers a wide range of academic programs across various schools, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the Phillips School of Business, the Plato S. Wilson School of Commerce, the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication, the School of Art and Design, the School of Health Sciences, and the School of Education. The university also has plans to open a School of Pharmacy in 2017, further expanding its academic offerings.

In recent years, High Point University has received recognition for its academic excellence, with accolades including top rankings in “America’s Best Colleges” published by U.S. News & World Report. The university’s commitment to providing a well-rounded education is reflected in its diverse array of study abroad programs, cultural enrichment series, and extensive honor societies.

Furthermore, High Point University has continually enhanced its campus life, athletic programs, and community involvement. The university’s commitment to student success is underscored by its Career and Internship Services, which assists students in preparing for life after graduation through career planning, internships, and skill development opportunities.

High Point University has also made significant contributions to the arts and culture through initiatives such as the Sechrest Gallery, which houses a permanent collection of original works donated by alumnus Darrell L. Sechrest. Additionally, the university has welcomed high-profile speakers to its campus, including former Presidents, business leaders, and renowned personalities.

However, the university’s remarkable growth and transformation have not been without scrutiny. High Point University has been the subject of media attention and criticism regarding its financial standing, debt levels, and handling of vendor relationships. These challenges have prompted the university to address its fiscal responsibility and academic legitimacy.

In summary, High Point University’s extensive history, consistent growth, and dedication to enriching student experiences have shaped it into a dynamic and multifaceted institution. The university continues to evolve, adapt, and remain steadfast in its pursuit of academic excellence and holistic development for its students.
